In 2003 he released the album 'Wuda Cuda Shuda' recorded live during a 2002 European tour and his autobiography 'Hit Me Fred: Recollections Of A Sideman' has been published by Duke University Press.

The book not only provides a detailed review of his work with James Brown and P-Funk but a highly entertaining and informative insight into the workings of the music industry. In 2006 his latest album 'It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing' was released on the label Sons Of Sound.
